Mining heat reuse calculator

Almost every watt a miner uses comes out as heat. Put it to work heating a building, a greenhouse or water and it replaces fuel you would otherwise buy, which lowers what your mining power really costs.

Questions

Do Bitcoin miners make good heaters?

A miner turns nearly all of its electricity into heat, the same as an electric heater, but it also earns coins. So the heat is effectively a discount on its power, or the mining is a discount on your heating.

How much heat does a miner give off?

About as much as the power it uses: a 3.5 kW miner gives about 3.5 kW of heat, roughly 12,000 BTU per hour, enough for a well-insulated home in mild weather.

Why does the heating season matter?

Heat is only worth something when you need it. Space heating may only count for 5 to 8 months a year, while greenhouses, drying and hot water can use heat all year.

What does the effective power price mean?

Your electricity price minus the value of the heat per kWh. If the heat replaces expensive fuel, it can push the effective price close to zero, which makes even older miners worth running.
